Italy: Wreck of Migrant Boat in an Area Under Greece's Responsibility

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi pointed out today, Thursday, that the wreck of the boat that sank in international waters off the Greek coast is located in the search and rescue area under Athens's responsibility. Piantedosi informed the Italian television channel "Sky TG24" that "the incident occurred... within the Greek search and rescue area, within the specific responsibility of this country." He added: "But this does not mean blaming Greece; it is only about defining areas of responsibility."

Greek authorities are continuing to search for migrants after the country’s deadliest shipwreck in years, though the prospects of finding survivors are slim and hundreds are feared to be missing. Piantedosi highlighted that "this is a major tragedy that encourages us even more on the path we have taken. We firmly believe that the best way to address this is to stop human traffickers." He continued: "We will only be able to do this by cooperating together with Europe and the international community."
