An explosion occurred at a cultural center during an event for journalists in northern Afghanistan on Saturday, resulting in one death and eight injuries, just two days after an explosion claimed by the Islamic State that killed the provincial governor.
The spokesperson for the Taliban government's interior ministry confirmed that the explosion took place at the Tabyān cultural center in the second police district of Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh province, due to a landmine. Among the injured are five journalists and three children, with the deceased being a security guard. It remains unclear who is behind the explosion.
Sajid al-Mousawi, one of the injured journalists from Balkh, reported that the explosion occurred during a celebration event for journalists.
According to his spokesperson, the governor of Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan will temporarily manage Balkh until Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada appoints a new governor.
