A spokesperson for the department explained that "the explosion occurred at 5:30 PM, and at that time there were no indications of injuries to other individuals." The local newspaper "Diario Vasco" stated that "authorities in the town are investigating the incident as a potential gender-based violence act." Spanish news agency sources quoted police saying, "the preliminary investigation indicated that the source of the explosion was a package in the possession of one of the victims."
