Emergency crews evacuated about 600 villagers in western Spain from their homes overnight after an arson fire destroyed approximately 8,000 hectares of forest near the border with Portugal. Spanish emergency services reported on Friday that "strong winds make it difficult to control the fire in the dense forest areas of Las Hurdes and Sierra de Gata in the Extremadura region." Authorities noted that around 260 firefighters and 165 soldiers are working to extinguish the fire. The President of the Extremadura region, Guillermo Fernández Vara, stated that "winds reaching speeds of 60 kilometers per hour and the nature of the forests hinder firefighting efforts."
