Turkey and U.S. Foreign Ministers Discuss NATO Expansion Ahead of Lithuania Summit

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that "Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his American counterpart Antony Blinken discussed the expansion of NATO during a phone call ahead of the alliance's summit in Lithuania." The White House mentioned on Sunday that U.S. President Joe Biden expressed during a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan his desire for Sweden to join the alliance "as soon as possible." Sweden failed last Thursday to convince Turkey to withdraw its opposition to its NATO membership during a meeting at the foreign minister level, as Ankara requested further actions in combating terrorism.
