Norway’s Royal Court has announced that King Harald V passed away today, Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89.
According to an official statement from the Norwegian Royal Palace, King Harald died "peacefully at Oslo University Hospital (Rikshospitalet) at 6:35 a.m. local time, following a decline in his health due to complications from hemolytic anemia and a severe bacterial blood infection."
With his passing, his 35-year reign comes to an end, and he is succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Haakon (now King Haakon VIII), as the new monarch of Norway.
King Harald V (1937–2026) was one of Norway’s most respected and popular historical figures, known for his reign marked by openness, modernization, and a lasting bond with the Norwegian people.
Here’s a look back at some milestones from his life:
1. Extraordinary Childhood
- Born on February 21, 1937, at Skaugum Estate near Oslo, Harald was the first prince born on Norwegian soil in 567 years, solidifying the monarchy following Norway’s modern independence.
- During the Nazi occupation of Norway in 1940, he was just three years old and had to flee with his family, spending his childhood as a refugee in Sweden and the United States until returning post-war in 1945.
2. Education and Military Background
- He received his education in Norwegian public schools, later attending the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Military Academy.
- Harald furthered his studies in history, economics, and political science at Balliol College, University of Oxford, UK.
3. A Marriage That Defied Tradition
- In 1968, he married Sonja Haraldsen after years of romance.
- Their union faced significant opposition because she was a commoner, so much so that Harald threatened to renounce his rights to the throne if he could not marry her, marking a historic and modernizing shift for the royal family.
4. Sporting and Olympic Heritage
- King Harald was an accomplished athlete, known for his sailing prowess.
- He represented Norway in the Summer Olympics three times (1964, 1968, 1972), carrying the national flag.
- Harald won the world sailing championship in 1987 and continued achieving top global placements even in his senior years.
5. Ruling Style and Influential Stances
- A Constitutional Monarch: Ascending to the throne in 1991 after his father King Olav V’s death, Harald’s role was mostly symbolic and ceremonial, without interfering in the government’s executive politics.
- Advocate for Humanity and Diversity: He became known for supporting cultural and racial diversity, as well as minority rights. In a famed 2016 speech, Harald emphasized that Norwegians come from all corners of the earth, embracing various religions and backgrounds, earning him the title of the "spiritual father" of a united nation.
- Crisis Leadership: His profound popularity was evident following the Oslo and Utøya terrorist attacks in 2011, when he delivered a moving speech, tears in his eyes, offering solace to the victims and urging unity and resilience in the face of fear.
