The Uruguayan Football Association announced the appointment of Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa on Monday, with reports indicating that the contract with the former Leeds United manager extends until 2026. Bielsa will take charge following Diego Alonso's departure after Uruguay's failure to advance beyond the group stage in the last World Cup. The Uruguay national team stated on their Twitter account after confirming Bielsa's appointment: "The fans are demanding matches and emotions, and the time has come."
Bielsa is expected to be introduced at a press conference tomorrow, Wednesday, marking his return to coaching after leaving Leeds in February 2022. He led Leeds to the Premier League after a 16-year absence. The 67-year-old coach has previously managed Olympique Marseille and Athletic Bilbao, as well as leading Argentina and Chile in the World Cup in 2002 and 2010, respectively. Bielsa will begin his journey with Uruguay by playing two friendly matches at home against Nicaragua and Cuba next month.
