Hundreds of Flights Canceled in Germany

Strikes at four airports in Germany led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights on Friday, in the latest wave of labor actions affecting the sector that has caused travel disruptions in recent months. The Verdi union called on security personnel and ground handling workers at Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Baden-Baden airports to strike in protest over wages and working conditions.

Stuttgart Airport stated in a statement that "no departures or arrivals will be possible today due to the Verdi strike," urging passengers not to come to the airport. Cologne/Bonn Airport reported that the strike resulted in the cancellation of 144 flights. Düsseldorf Airport had announced earlier this week that it was operating on a "significantly reduced flight schedule," with 368 flights originally scheduled to take off and land today.

Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg airports canceled all commercial flights earlier this week due to strikes, which follow a surge in labor issues triggered by the recovery of travel after the COVID-19 pandemic, along with employees' demands for wage increases amid rising inflation.
