United States and Canada Reach Agreement to Reject Asylum Seekers

Officials have stated that the United States and Canada have reached an agreement to reject asylum seekers who arrive at border crossings without obtaining approval from authorities. A large number of migrants cross without permits via Roxham Road at the border between the United States and Canada. This move will close a loophole created by the asylum agreement signed in 2004 with the United States, which defined where migrants should submit their asylum applications. Additionally, this agreement prevented Canada from turning away individuals attempting to enter through unofficial crossing points. Unnamed U.S. officials told CBS News, the media partner of BBC America, that Canada will also establish, as part of the agreement, a new program for 15,000 migrants fleeing persecution and violence in South and Central America.
