UN Security Council Condemns Taliban's Ban on Afghan Female UN Employees

The UN Security Council unanimously condemned the Taliban's ban on Afghan female employees working for the United Nations in Afghanistan, urging Taliban leaders to "quickly retract their campaign against the rights of women and girls." The Council's resolution, drafted by the United Arab Emirates and Japan, described the ban as "unprecedented in UN history," emphasizing the "indispensable role of women in Afghan society." It stated that the ban on Afghan female UN employees undermines human rights and humanitarian principles. UAE Ambassador to the UN, Lana Nusseibeh, noted that "over 90 countries sponsored the resolution from Afghanistan's immediate neighbors, the Islamic world, and around the globe." She added, "This support makes our core message today more significant than ever; the world will not remain silent while the existence of women in Afghanistan is erased from society."
