The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency announced that a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Papua, in the far east of the country, today, Monday, at a depth of 33 kilometers on land. The agency indicated that a tsunami is not likely to occur.
Sources from the police told Reuters that residents in Jayapura, the capital of Papua, felt the earthquake strongly, but no reports of damage or injuries have emerged yet.
Indonesia is located on both sides of the so-called "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Ocean, an area that is highly seismically active where various plates meet on the Earth's crust, causing numerous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
