Germany Supports Accountability for Niger's Military Council

The German Foreign Ministry announced today, Thursday, that Minister Annalena Baerbock held discussions with African Union Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and other stakeholders regarding the coup in Niger. The ministry added that Germany now supports European Union sanctions against the military council. In statements published on X (formerly Twitter), the ministry noted that Baerbock engaged in talks "aimed at restoring constitutional order" in Niger. The ministry indicated that German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze met with representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during a visit to Abuja. The Foreign Ministry's statement said, "After suspending development and security cooperation, we now want the European Union to impose sanctions on the coup leaders."
