The U.S. military believes it "killed 13 Al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia in a collective airstrike for self-defense at the request of the Somali government." The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced that it "conducted an airstrike on Saturday targeting Al-Shabaab near Sierra, about 45 kilometers northwest of Kismayo, based on a request from the government." It added in a statement: "The collective airstrike, which was conducted in self-defense, took place in the early hours of August 26 to support Somali National Army forces that were engaged with Al-Shabaab."
