Loss of at Least 10 Migrants and One Death After Boat Capsizes Off Tunisian Coast

On Sunday, the spokesperson for the Sfax Court, Judge Fawzi Al-Masmoudi, announced that at least 10 Tunisian migrants are missing and one has died after a boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia while they were attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Italy. He added to Reuters that "Coast Guard forces rescued 11 migrants who were on the same vessel that set sail from the shores of Jerjis in the south of the country." The latest tragedy raises the number of those who have died or gone missing off the Tunisian coast to nearly 620 in the first half of this year, a record figure. Tunisia is facing an unprecedented migration crisis, having replaced Libya as the main departure point for those fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa and the Middle East in search of a better life in Europe.
