The main opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress, has overwhelmingly voted to retain former President John Mahama as the party leader and candidate for the 2024 presidential elections. This will be Mahama's third attempt to win the highest office in Ghana, which is one of the most stable democracies in Africa. He finished second to President Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
The ruling party is expected to choose its candidate later this year. The upcoming presidential elections are anticipated to be highly competitive. No party has previously won more than two consecutive terms, and the country is currently facing its worst economic crisis in over 30 years, leading to rising living costs and currency collapse (cedi), which has sparked protests.
