The appointed president of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, stated on Thursday that a gradual phase-out of fossil fuels is inevitable. Al Jaber, who also heads the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), has faced criticism from climate activists for what they perceive as a lenient stance towards fossil fuels, as he called for addressing their emissions instead of advocating for a reduction in their use. Al Jaber said, "The gradual phase-out of fossil fuels is a necessity. The speed at which this occurs depends on how quickly we find carbon-free alternatives, while ensuring energy security and accessibility at an affordable cost."
