Arrest of a Person at Heathrow Airport in Anti-Terrorism Law Context

A man has been arrested as part of a British anti-terrorism investigation concerning the discovery of a quantity of uranium at London's Heathrow Airport at the end of December, according to the police. The arrested individual is 60 years old and was apprehended by Cheshire Police (in Northwest England) under the "Terrorism Act," which includes provisions regarding the possession and manufacture of radioactive materials. He has been released on bail until April. The London police indicated on Wednesday that anti-terrorism agencies opened an investigation after a small amount of uranium was found in a package at Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest in the world, on December 29. The newspaper "The Sun," which was the first to report the seizure, noted that the package originated from Pakistan. Police chief Richard Smith stated: "I want to clarify that despite this arrest and based on the information we have, this incident does not appear to be linked to any threat to the public," emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing and indicating that the small quantity of uranium discovered "raises concerns but demonstrates the effectiveness of the measures and searches we implement with our partners to detect this type of material."
