The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced on Wednesday that it is in the process of tightening restrictions on highly classified information following an alleged leak incident that led to the arrest of an airman in April and subsequent charges against him for disseminating classified documents on the messaging app "Discord."
After a 45-day review, the Pentagon stated that the new measures include appointing "monitors for highly classified information," creating a new office for threats originating from within, and plans for electronic detection systems in work areas containing highly classified information.
Jack Douglas Teixeira, 21, from North Dayton, Massachusetts, faces six charges of willfully retaining and disseminating national defense information in June. The leaked documents, which were posted on social media, are believed to be the most serious security breach since over 700,000 documents, videos, and diplomatic communications were released on the WikiLeaks website in 2010.
