American media reported that Tori Bowie, the former world champion in the 100-meter race in athletics, died due to complications during childbirth. An autopsy report from the medical examiner's office in Orange County, Florida, obtained by USA Today Sports, stated that Bowie was eight months pregnant and went into labor when she died. Potential complications included respiratory distress and preeclampsia, a rare condition that can cause seizures. The medical examiner reported that Bowie's death was natural.
Bowie's agent, Kimberly Holland, told CBS News that announcing the news would end the "painful" speculation surrounding the cause of death, adding, "Unfortunately, many people, including the media, speculated that she took her own life, which is extremely painful, so I hope that knowing the truth will lead to many apologies."
The American runner, who earned gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, was crowned world champion the following year. She passed away on May 3rd at the age of 32.
