UN expert Fionnuala Ní Aoláin said on Monday that "the treatment of Guantanamo prisoners by the US government was harsh, inhumane, and degrading under international law," urging Washington to apologize and offer compensation. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin told reporters after concluding her first visit as a UN expert to the detention facility in Cuba, "After two decades of detention, I witnessed the severe and ongoing suffering of the detainees." She added, "The US government must swiftly reach a judicial determination and provide an apology and guarantees of non-recurrence."
