Greek Vessel Tragedy: Syrian Finds His Brother Among Survivors

A difficult moment was experienced by a young Syrian who found his brother among the survivors of the migrant boat disaster that sank near the city of Kalamata in southern Greece. Mohammad, an 18-year-old who survived the drowning, broke down in tears upon seeing his older brother Fadi, who had traveled from the Netherlands in search of him. The two cried and embraced across the metal barriers set up by Greek police around a warehouse where the survivors have been sleeping for two days in Kalamata.

Greece has identified 104 survivors and recovered 78 bodies following the disaster, but there are still missing individuals. Witness accounts indicate that the "death boat" may have carried up to 750 people, including approximately 120 Syrians.
