General Brice Oligui Nguema was sworn in today, Monday, before Gabon's Constitutional Court as the country's interim president during a ceremony broadcast on television. This follows the military council's overthrow of President Ali Bongo in a coup last week. Nguema stated, "The citizens of the country must seize the opportunity to adopt a new constitution through a referendum," calling for "the enactment of new criminal and electoral laws." The army had toppled President Ali Bongo on Wednesday soon after he was declared the winner of a disputed election.
