The United States urged Lebanese leaders to act swiftly to elect a president after six months have passed since the end of President Michel Aoun's term, leaving the top position vacant.
The US State Department stated that Lebanese political leaders must move quickly to elect a president who will unify the country and implement necessary reforms rapidly to rescue the economy from its crisis. The statement emphasized that Lebanese leaders should not prioritize their personal interests and ambitions over those of their country and its people. Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the State Department, stated in a statement that elected leaders in Lebanon need to form their own government. The United States believes that Lebanon needs a president who is free from corruption, works to unify the country, enforces transparency and accountability, prioritizes the interests of the Lebanese people, and implements vital economic reforms, particularly those required to secure an International Monetary Fund program.
The US State Department's statement confirmed that solutions to Lebanon's political and economic crises can only come from within Lebanon, not from the international community. It is now time to take action to select the appropriate leadership and save the country from further disasters.
