Azerbaijan Investigates "Terrorist Attack" After Shooting of Deputy

Azerbaijan Investigates

The State Security Service of Azerbaijan is investigating a "terrorist attack" following the shooting of an anti-Iran parliamentary deputy at his home.

The security agency reported that parliamentary deputy Fadl Mustafa was hospitalized after being shot in the shoulder and thigh with a Kalashnikov rifle on Tuesday evening.

They added that his injuries are not life-threatening, and a criminal investigation has been opened to identify the perpetrator.

The State Security Service noted that Mustafa is known for his anti-Iranian views. Earlier, Mustafa, who leads a small opposition party in parliament perceived as fully loyal to the government, described Iran as a "terrorist state."

Relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, which has a large Azerbaijani ethnic minority in its northwestern region, have become strained in recent months.
