Today, Wednesday, a U.S. court denied former President Donald Trump's request for a new trial regarding his case with writer E. Jean Carroll. In a 59-page decision, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan dismissed Trump's arguments to reduce the damages to less than one million dollars, stating that the ruling issued on May 9 was not "grossly erroneous" or a "misapplication of the law." Kaplan affirmed that New York's criminal law defines rape much more narrowly than what ordinary people perceive the term to mean, and Trump was wrong to argue that this was a defense for him. Kaplan stated that the evidence justified awarding Carroll three million dollars in damages for defamation, rejecting Trump's claim that it was based on "mere speculation" about how Carroll's reputation was harmed. In his efforts to lower the compensation, Trump described the two million dollar award for sexual assault as "too large," and he denied the accusation, stating it was far from rape.
