The United Nations Security Council today called on the warring parties in Sudan to cease hostilities amid ongoing clashes in the capital Khartoum, following the collapse of talks aimed at maintaining a ceasefire and alleviating the humanitarian crisis. In a press statement approved by the 15-member council in New York, it expressed "grave concern" regarding the fighting and condemned all attacks on civilians, UN personnel, and humanitarian agencies. The statement emphasized the necessity for both sides to immediately stop hostilities, facilitate humanitarian aid access, establish a permanent ceasefire arrangement, and resume the process towards achieving a lasting, comprehensive, and democratic political settlement in Sudan. The council also agreed to extend the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, but for only six months.
