Injuries to 12 French Police Officers in Clashes with Protesters

French authorities announced that 12 police officers were injured today, Saturday, in clashes with protesters in the Savoie region, where a demonstration against a high-speed train project in the Alps turned violent. Approximately 2,000 protesters gathered in Moûtiers to oppose the establishment of a railway line that includes the construction of a tunnel linking the French city of Lyon and the Italian city of Turin. François Ravier, president of the Savoie region, stated at a press conference: "The protesters threw stones at the riot police, prompting the police to respond with tear gas, which resulted in an injury to one protester." He added that "security forces will remain at the site throughout the night to prevent the situation from escalating." Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin revealed the number of injured police officers in a tweet. Officials reported that border inspections uncovered 400 pieces of bladed weapons and hammers, while security forces sent 96 known individuals back to Italy.
