Strong Earthquake Strikes Sumatra: What Was Its Magnitude?

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island today, Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea at a depth of 84 kilometers, 72 kilometers southwest of the city of Padang Sidempuan in northern Sumatra. The American observatory noted that the countries affected by the earthquake include Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics reassured that there is no tsunami threat resulting from the earthquake.
