U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told Chinese government officials and climate experts that "the United States and China must work together to combat the existential threat posed by climate change." During her visit to Beijing, Yellen emphasized that "previous cooperation between the two countries on climate change has made global progress possible, such as the Paris Agreement of 2015," adding that "both governments want to support emerging markets and developing countries in pursuit of climate goals."
She further stated, "Funding for such initiatives must be coordinated efficiently and effectively," considering that "support from Beijing, Washington, and others for existing multilateral institutions focused on climate issues, such as the Green Climate Fund and climate investment funds, can enhance the impact of these efforts."
Given the size of both countries, cooperation between the United States and China is vital for international efforts to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
