The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, revealed that the court has opened an office in Venezuela following a meeting with the country's President Nicolás Maduro. During the office opening ceremony, Khan noted that under this agreement, the International Criminal Court hopes to work "more closely" with Venezuela, assist in implementing judicial reforms, and ensure "more justice" in the country.
Maduro stated, "I am confident that this office will add positive practices; it will certainly have a very positive impact." Khan announced in March 2022 that the International Criminal Court would open an office in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. The court announced in November 2021 the initiation of a preliminary investigation into potential crimes against humanity allegedly committed since 2017 by officials in Maduro's government.
