Indian authorities have evacuated over 75,000 residents from vulnerable coastal areas as a cyclone approaches the Arabian Sea, expected to make landfall in India on Thursday evening. The Indian Meteorological Department reported that "the storm, classified as a severe cyclone, was located approximately 180 kilometers off the port of Jakhau in the Indian state of Gujarat and about 270 kilometers from Karachi in Pakistan."
The meteorological department noted that "the storm seems to have lost some of its intensity," and predicted maximum wind speeds between 115 and 125 kilometers per hour.
Authorities in India and Pakistan have converted schools and government buildings into relief camps to shelter the displaced. The Indian Meteorological Department stated in a statement that homes in the coastal region are expected to suffer total destruction, with severe damage anticipated to crops, vegetation, and roads in the area. Additionally, Indian authorities have suspended fishing operations until tomorrow, closed schools, and forbade the use of beaches.
