Singapore: Resignation of Parliament Speaker and Deputy from Ruling Party

The office of Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced today, Monday, the resignation of the Parliament Speaker and another senior Parliamentary Deputy from the ruling party. Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin and MP Cheng Li Hui resigned over matters relating to "propriety and personal conduct." Lee's office stated, "The resignation of Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin and MP Cheng Li Hui was necessary to maintain high standards of decorum." Both the Speaker and the Deputy are members of the People's Action Party. Tan had previously apologized to an opposition member of parliament last week for using "unparliamentary language."
