Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated today, while heading to the NATO summit in Lithuania, that "Hungary's ratification of Sweden's request to join the alliance is merely a technical matter," affirming that his government supports Sweden's membership. Szijjártó noted that "the final statement of the NATO summit in Vilnius does not include a specific timeline for Ukraine's accession to the military alliance." He added in a video posted on his Facebook page: "In this part of the final statement of the summit, there was no mention of a date for Ukraine's accession or a timeline with specific dates." Szijjártó's comments come after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan approved the referral of Sweden's request to the Turkish parliament for ratification on Monday.
