A senior Israeli official stated that "Israel has no intention of reoccupying the Gaza Strip or controlling it 'for a long time'," adding that "our operation is not open-ended." Speaking to reporters in Washington late last night, on condition of anonymity, he said: "We estimate that our current operations are effective and successful, and we will continue to push. It is not absolute or forever." The official explained that "the idea of Israel's military entry is to destroy Hamas's ability to threaten us. We understand that this will take time, and even if we complete this phase of our military operation, we still need to take some actions against their remaining military infrastructure."
