Goalless Draw in the World Cup: Uruguay vs. South Korea

Uruguay, two-time world champion (1930 and 1950), drew 0-0 with South Korea in a match held this afternoon at the Education City Stadium in Group H of the 22nd World Cup being hosted by Qatar until December 18. Unlike the playing style typically seen in South America, the Uruguayan players relied on long balls to penetrate the tightly packed South Korean defense. The most dangerous aerial play came from a header by Argentine defender Diego Godín from Vélez Sarsfield, which hit the bottom of the right post of goalkeeper Kim Seung-kyu’s net in the 35th minute following a corner kick. In addition, Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez was unable to convert crosses in front of the South Korean goal during the first half. In the 80th minute, a shot by Núñez from outside the box went just past the left post of the South Korean goal. Additionally, the right post of Kim Seung-kyu’s goal thwarted a shot from Federico Valverde, a defender for Real Madrid, from outside the area in the 89th minute.
