Pope Francis Washes the Feet of Prisoners on Maundy Thursday

Pope Francis, who appears to have fully recovered from bronchitis, began a busy four-day period leading up to Easter on Thursday, urging clergy to avoid sparking division within the Church and washing the feet of young prisoners at a juvenile detention center.

On Maundy Thursday, Pope Francis gathered with dozens of cardinals, bishops, and about 1,800 priests at St. Peter's Church to renew the vows they made at their ordination.

Later, he went to the Casal del Marmo prison in the outskirts of Rome, where he washed and kissed the feet of 12 young prisoners in a gesture to commemorate the humility of Jesus Christ.

In a short, improvised sermon, he told the inmates, "Anyone can make a mistake."

Pope Francis, 86 years old, spent four days in the hospital last week for treatment of bronchitis after complaining of breathing difficulties.
