U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer stated that if China is not committed to the success of the bloc, it is "unfortunate." The summit was seen as a potential venue for a meeting between Xi and U.S. President Joe Biden after efforts by the two global powers over months to mend their relationship, which had deteriorated due to trade and geopolitical tensions.
