The French national team defeated their English counterparts 2-1 in a match held at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday evening in the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. France will face Morocco on Wednesday at 9 PM in the semi-finals.
France took the lead through Aurélien Tchouaméni in the 17th minute, before Harry Kane equalized from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. Olivier Giroud scored France's second goal to put them ahead again in the 78th minute, and Kane missed a second penalty in the 83rd minute.
Kane needed one more goal to surpass the legendary Wayne Rooney as England's all-time leading scorer, with both having scored 53 goals.
Kane is now the player with the most penalty goals in the history of the World Cup.
Meanwhile, French player Giroud reached his 53rd goal for France in 118 matches, surpassing Thierry Henry as the all-time top scorer for the team that won the last World Cup.
Additionally, French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made history by becoming the player with the most appearances for the French national team, with a total of 143 international matches.
Lloris surpassed his compatriot Lilian Thuram (142 matches), who retired from international play in 2006.
The list of top players includes Lloris, Thuram, Thierry Henry (123), Giroud (118), Marcel Desailly (116), and Antoine Griezmann (114).
