Indonesian police indicated today, Wednesday, that a fire broke out in a nickel smelter, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to six others. This incident is the latest in a series of deadly accidents that have raised concerns about safety at the $2.7 billion facility. Local police spokesperson Joko Winartono confirmed that "the incident occurred on Monday at the Jembastar Nickel Industry facility in Central Sulawesi." For its part, Jembastar Nickel Industry stated in a press release: "The worker died after receiving medical treatment, and the injured are receiving care at a health facility."
