Today, Thursday, the first president of the Republic of Moldova, Mircea Snegur, passed away at the age of 83. Snegur served as the first president of Moldova from 1990 to 1996, and prior to that, he held the position of Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 to 1990 (head of state). During his tenure, Snegur did not promote the idea of union with Romania and supported the idea of abolishing the autonomous status of the breakaway Republic of Transnistria.
