The Financial Times reported today, citing a U.S. official, that the United States will establish relations with the new military government in Niger, recognizing that the coup that occurred there in July is a reality. The newspaper quoted Jud DeVeremont, the U.S. National Security Council's Africa affairs official, stating, "We are engaging with the region in ways that align with our laws so that we can continue to ensure that the region is safe."
