Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in Sydney, Australia's largest city, today, Sunday, prompting residents to protect their homes with sandbags and request assistance following prior warnings from authorities about adverse weather conditions. Emergency services received 50 calls for help from residents in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, regarding property protection. Most requests focused on assistance with placing sandbags and sealing holes in rooftops.
Sydney experienced its highest rainfall rate in 2022 in 164 years, following the eastern coast of Australia being affected by the La Niña climate phenomenon for the third consecutive year, which brought heavy rains. Outside of Sydney, authorities received 27 requests for help in the Central Coast region, located about 87 kilometers north of the city. The National Meteorological Agency issued a warning for a severe thunderstorm that may affect areas in Sydney today and forecasted heavy rainfall and potential flooding, warning that the city will experience more rain this week.
