Exemption Allows Iraq to Pay Iran for Electricity Costs

A U.S. official revealed to "Reuters" that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed a new exemption today, Tuesday, related to national security, allowing Iraq to pay for electricity costs to Iran. For the first time, it permits payments to be deposited in accounts in non-Iraqi banks. The official added that the United States hopes this 120-day exemption will help alleviate Iranian pressure on Iraq to obtain funds that could previously only be deposited in restricted accounts in Iraq.
