New U.S. Sanctions on North Korea

The United States imposed new sanctions on North Korea today, Tuesday, involving four companies and one individual linked to concealing funds and malicious cyber activities. The U.S. Treasury Department stated that it, along with South Korea, has jointly sanctioned Kim Sang-jin and "Shinyong Cooperative for Information Technology." It added that the other three groups—Research Center 110, Pyongyang Automation University, and the Technical Reconnaissance Office—are already under sanctions from South Korea for their involvement in cyber operations and generating illicit revenue to support North Korea's weapons of mass destruction programs. Brian Nelson, the Treasury Department’s Assistant Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, stated, "Today’s action continues to highlight North Korea's extensive illegal operations in the cyber and information technology space, which fund the regime’s illicit programs for weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles."
