Manchester United, competing in the English Premier League, announced on Thursday the selection of Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes as the new permanent captain of the team. The 28-year-old player will replace defender Harry Maguire, who was stripped of the captaincy by coach Erik ten Hag after the English international failed to secure a place in the first team. Fernandes, who has scored 64 goals and provided 54 assists in 185 matches for the club across all competitions, led the team in the absence of Maguire, who spent most of last season injured or on the bench. British media reports have linked the defender with a potential exit from the club. United stated in a statement, "The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the captain's armband on several occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team permanently."
