An Indian court on Thursday acquitted 69 Hindus, including former minister Maya Kodnani from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, of the murder of 11 Muslims during communal riots in the western state of Gujarat in 2002. Victims' representative and their families, Shamshad Pathan, indicated that they would appeal the decision in a higher court. The killings took place in Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002, a day after individuals set fire to a train carrying Hindu pilgrims, leading to one of the worst outbreaks of religious violence in India.
