The Syrian Observatory reported that the leader of the "Syrian Democratic Forces," Mazloum Abdi, survived an assassination attempt in northern Iraq, after he was targeted by a drone believed to be Turkish, in the vicinity of the airport in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan region, Iraq. The Observatory noted that Mazloum Abdi returned to northeastern Syria after escaping the attack. For its part, The Wall Street Journal quoted U.S. officials stating that a drone targeted the leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces in northern Iraq, and that three American soldiers were with General Abdi at the time of the attack, with no injuries reported. Additionally, Russia Today reported from sources that "Mazloum was in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and he was aboard a military helicopter, while two Turkish planes were monitoring him," and that due to the presence of foreign figures with him, the two Turkish planes were unable to carry out the assassination, and only warning strikes were directed.
