Taiwanese Theater Features Notable Production from Hong Kong

A Taiwanese theater is showcasing a performance from Hong Kong that depicts the events of Tiananmen Square, commemorating the thirty-fourth anniversary of the crackdown that occurred in Beijing. The play focuses on the decline of freedoms in the former British colony and the bloody events of 1989.

The Shinehouse Theater in Taiwan, with support from Amnesty International, is staging six performances of "35 May," which began on the second of this month and concludes tomorrow, Sunday. The narrative revolves around parents mourning the death of their son at Tiananmen Square.

In this context, the theater director, Chung Po-yuan, pointed out that the focus is not only on discussing June 4, 1989, but also on all forms of authoritarian situations.

While the play (by writer Candice Chung) has not been officially banned in Hong Kong, many believe that the authorities in the city, where discussing the events of Tiananmen has become taboo, will act to prevent it from being performed.
