Demonstration for Parliament's Dissolution in Kuwait

Reuters reported that about a hundred Kuwaitis protested late Monday evening in Freedom Square in front of the National Assembly building, opposing the Constitutional Court ruling that dissolved the elected parliament from September and reinstated the previous parliament elected in 2020. The demonstrators raised slogans demanding the dissolution of the 2020 parliament and the resignation of the Speaker of the Assembly, Marzouq Al-Ghanim, who was restored to power by the Constitutional Court. They also called for a national popular conference for comprehensive political reform.

Kuwait has entered a political impasse after the Constitutional Court ruled on March 19 that the parliamentary elections held in September were invalid and reinstated the previous parliament. The ruling came at a time when tensions between the parliament and the government had intensified. The Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, had moved last year to resolve the political dispute by dissolving the parliament and calling for early elections, in which opposition members made significant gains.
