A dust storm caused visibility levels to drop in Illinois, leading to at least 6 fatalities on Monday due to collisions involving around 100 vehicles on a highway. The Illinois State Police stated that "approximately 40 to 60 passenger cars, along with 30 commercial vehicles, were involved in accidents in the state due to the strong winds that swept in, carrying dust from agricultural fields across the highway." Police reported that "more than 30 people were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, and the ages of the victims ranged from two years to 80 years." A massive pileup on I-55 south of Springfield, Illinois has closed the interstate for nearly 30 miles. Blowing dust off freshly plowed fields led to very low visibility.
